A good floor starts below the surface. The finish you see is only as flat, stable and long-lasting as the subfloor and preparation underneath it, and in Arizona the slab beneath the house plays a big part in that. This guide covers how we install and repair luxury vinyl plank, laminate and tile, what to know before you choose a material, and when the job needs more than a handyman.
Signs your flooring needs repair or replacement
Tile problems are usually visible: cracked tiles, grout that is crumbling or missing, tiles that sound hollow when tapped, or lines that follow across several tiles in a row. A line of cracks can point to slab movement rather than a single impact, which is worth knowing before new tile goes over it.
For plank flooring, look for gaps opening between boards, planks that lift at the edges, a floating floor that feels spongy or squeaks, and scratches or gouges that have gone through the wear layer. Old builder carpet that holds odors, stains and dust may be a good candidate for replacement when allergies or appearance are the concern.

- Grout that is crumbling, stained or missing
- Planks that gap, lift or click apart
- Warped or damaged areas near doors and appliances
- Carpet that is worn, stained or holding odor
Our installation process step by step
We begin by checking the room: measuring, looking at the existing floor, and testing the surface for flatness. Old flooring is removed and the subfloor cleaned. Bumps are ground or scraped down, and low spots are filled with a leveling product, because a floating plank floor over a dip will flex and eventually separate.
We then plan the layout so the finished floor looks balanced. Starting from the center or the most visible line prevents thin slivers at one wall, and planning where planks end avoids stacking seams. Planks are cut to fit around doorways, vents and cabinets, with a small expansion gap at the edges that is later hidden by baseboards or trim.
After installation we put in transitions and reinstall or replace baseboard, check for any loose or noisy spots, and clean up. For tile repairs, we remove the damaged pieces, prepare the bed, set new tile, and regrout so the repair blends.
Choosing a material for Arizona homes
Heat and sun drive the choice. Luxury vinyl plank is popular because it is water resistant and handles temperature swings well, and many products are designed for areas that see strong sun through large windows. Laminate is a good option in many rooms but is less tolerant of standing water. Tile is cool underfoot and durable, but it is hard on dropped dishes and unforgiving of slab movement.
Sunlight through patio doors can fade and heat flooring near large windows, so it is worth asking a product's manufacturer about heat and sun tolerance. Many manufacturers also set limits on how much floor area can be installed without expansion breaks. We follow the instructions for the product you choose, because following them protects the warranty and the floor.
Arizona factors under and around the floor
Most valley homes sit on concrete slabs. Slabs are flat when they are poured, but over the years they can crack and shift slightly. Moisture can also move through concrete, and a flooring product that is sensitive to moisture needs the slab to be checked or sealed first. We discuss this up front so there are no surprises.
Dust is another local factor. Fine desert dust works under floating floors and into grout lines, so tight seams, sealed grout and proper transitions help. Older homes may have thinset or adhesive residue, and in some older flooring materials there may be hazardous components. If we suspect anything of that kind, we stop and tell you, and the right specialist should test it before removal.
Common mistakes and DIY problems
Skipping subfloor prep is the usual culprit behind floors that squeak, lift or crack. Not leaving an expansion gap allows a floating floor to buckle in heat. Cutting tight against walls, mixing boxes with different color lots, and not acclimating material to the room before installing are other frequent errors.
With tile, the mistakes are uneven thinset coverage, which leaves hollow spots, and grout applied before the tile has set. A hairline crack that returns after regrouting often means the underlying cause was never addressed.
What drives the cost of a flooring job
The factors are square footage, the material you choose, the condition and flatness of the subfloor, the removal and disposal of existing flooring, the complexity of the layout, the number of doorways and obstacles, and whether trim and baseboards are being replaced. Moving furniture and stairs add time. Repair work is priced by the extent of the damage and how much prep it requires.
We provide an itemized upfront quote after seeing the space, so you can see what goes to material, prep and labor.
Before we arrive, and when it is a larger job
Choose your material and keep a few extra boxes in mind for cuts and future repairs. Clear small items from the room, and let us know about any known moisture issues or past leaks. If you are unsure which product suits you, ask us before you order.
Whole-house installations covering very large areas, major slab repairs, moisture remediation and hardwood sanding and refinishing are beyond what we do as a handyman company. We will tell you plainly when a flooring contractor or a specialist should take over, and we can handle the trim and finishing work around it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What flooring works best in Arizona?
Luxury vinyl plank and tile hold up best to heat and sun. Laminate works well in many rooms. We can advise based on the room.
Can you remove my old flooring?
Yes. Removal and disposal can be included in the estimate.
Can new flooring go over my old floor?
Sometimes, depending on the product and the condition of what is underneath. Floating plank floors can go over some existing surfaces if they are flat and sound, but we check first and tell you honestly.
How do I know if my slab has a moisture problem?
Signs include musty smells, discolored flooring, or past leaks. Testing is the reliable way to know. We discuss it before installation if there is any reason for concern.
Can you repair just a few damaged tiles?
Yes, if we can get a matching tile. Keeping spare tiles from the original installation makes this much easier. If a match is not available, we talk through the options.
How long before I can walk on new flooring?
Plank floors can usually be walked on right away. Tile needs time for the setting material and grout to cure, and we tell you how long to wait for your specific job.
